CLASSIFICATION OF INDIAN RAILWAYS

 

Railway Track:- Based on the Importance Of Route, Traffic Carried, and Maximum Permissible Speed, the  Railway Board has classified the Indian Railway lines into the following three categories.


 Types Of Railway Track

 

1)                    Main lines

2)                    Branch lines

3)                    Trunk Routes


What Is Main Lines?

 

1.          Main Lines : The lines that carry 10 Gross Million Tonnes per annum or more for B.G. & 2.5 GMT or more for M.G. are called Main Lines. (Maximum Permissible Speed Allowed is 75 km/hr for MG and 100 km/hr for BG)


What Is Branch Lines?


 2.          Branch Lines: Branch lines carry a load of less than 10 GMT per annum for B.G & less than 2.5 GMT per annum for M.G.(Max Speed Allowed is less than 100 km/hr B.G. and 75 km/hr for M.G.)

 

What Is Trunk Routes/Lines?


3.          Trunk Routes : Trunk Routes are the Main routes on a Railway. (Max Permissible speed = 120 km/hr B.G. & 80 km/hr M.G.)


There are 7 Trunk Routes available in our country.

 

 

1. Delhi-Howrah

 

2. Howrah-Mumbai

 

3. Mumbai-Delhi

 

4.  Delhi-Guwahati

 

5. Delhi-Chennai

 

6.  Chennai-Howrah

 

7. Chennai-Mumbai.
