Elaboration:

Clause 25.3.1 of IS 456:2000 specifies that the unsupported length between end restraints of a column should not exceed 60 times its least lateral dimension. 

The unsupported length is the clear distance between members that can provide lateral support to the column. 

For a pin-ended column, it is the distance between the hinges.
